In Shadow, by Gordon Lawrie
Sam Cooke shares an Edinburgh flat with call-centre colleague Rachelle. Sam is asexual, and has ambitions to be a crime journalist, whereas Rachelle is mainly interested in fun and sex. She's even tried Sam, but with little success.
On the thin side, and with no obvious features, Sam is one of those individuals no one notices in public places. Sam's not happy about that, but gradually, it proves to be an asset. Early on, Rachelle and Sam are witness to a car crash, and Sam's first-hand account is published on the local evening newspaper. It brings the pair to the attention of Detective Sergeant Andrew Shufflebottom – whom they quickly come to call 'DS Andrew" for obvious reasons.
Sam's ability to observe unnoticed proves to be a massive asset to DS Andrew in dealing with further policing issues.
